An Update on Dave San Jose by Pat Long San Jose

On Behalf of Pat Long San Jose

August 7, 2010

Last Wednesday Dave San Jose was playing Racquetball, his second favorite activity after the Bikes 90800 Bike Program when he collapsed at the gym. A doctor and nurse started by stander CPR, they found him in cardiac arrest and defibrillated (shocked) him with the club’s AEO. An ER doctor from Memorial Hospital and the paramedics continued his care until he was stable, and rushed him to the hospital for an emergency angiogram. He met all the criteria for the “Hypothermia Protocol” initiated to preserve his neurological function. He has the “A Team” caring for him and all the latest medical technology available is being employed to address this unexpected event.

An Angel was on his shoulder by directing doctors, nurses, and paramedics during this critical time. He is in the coronary care until and he is unable to receive visitors or flowers. The family appreciates the prayers and the good wishes.

Dave is precious to our community and our youth need his continued guidance as well. Dave and his family are in our thoughts and prayers with each progressing day!

Dave is one of the pillars in the North Long Beach Community. He is a strong activist and supporter of the LBPD. And, a good friend and sounding board to me. He is in my prayers and I know he will pull through.

  1. My thoughts go out to Dave and his family at this difficult time. I have been aware of Dave and his work for many years, constantly reminded of how many lives he touches on a regular basis. My mom used to work with Dave talking to kids involved with gang activity. My 12 year old daughter got to know him a little bit on a trip to China a couple of years ago, and was also shocked to hear about his condition. I forget that the kids take in these events at a heightened level of reality….she was quite shocked to hear about Grandma’s friend. And finally, I was in the ER at my own husband’s side when he was brought in by the paramedics. The whole week has been surreal and I hope the ordeal ends soon with a positive outcome for everyone.

Thanks, Carina, for keeping us posted with accurate information. Dave is so well-loved and many are concerned about him. His work with the youth in North Long Beach is so inspirational. I am keeping positive thoughts and continual prayers for his full recovery and return to the program and the kids he loves so much. Pat & family – you’re in my thoughts and prayers too during this difficult time. Praise & thanks for Kelli’s husband, Rich, not needing surgery and being home already. Continued prayers for his speedy and full recovery too.

  3. Thank you for your prayers and positive thoughts for Dave San Jose. He is truly a remarkable person and he has touched so many lives, including mine in an extremely special way. When I was invited to write for the NLB Anthology there was no hesitation on my part who to write about because there is only ONE Dave San Jose. With all the love and influence he has shared generously with so many, I know there are many concerned and caring people. I think his wife Pat says it best, “he is at the right place at the right time” meaning he is getting the best medical treatment at Memorial Hospital. WE will keep our spirits high and our prayers and positive thoughts coming for a speedy recovery.

Kelli, I am so thankful your husband did not have surgery and that he too is receiving the BEST medical treatment by the best doctor team too! Sending you and your family big hugs Kelli! Let me know if you need anything.
