It’s that special time of year when the parents have big smiles on their faces and the teachers have a crazy look in their eye – it’s back to school! I attended my first school related meeting this morning and was inspired by the collaboration of the Longfellow and Hughes Green Teams. They both accomplished a tremendous number of good deeds last year and have big plans, lofty goals and high bars set for the school year ahead.
They are fulfilling the spirit of the Connected Corridor by leading field trips and work days at Franklin Middle School, our neighbor to the south. The school also plans to reach out to the local Bixby Knolls business community by asking for them to donate – their trash. That’s right, they want your trash to help divert the amount of trash going in to landfills.
If you are a business and would like to support the local schools and their Green Initiatives, please think about participating. Local businessman, Mark Hawkins of Ink Peace has generously offered to be the information liaison for this new program.
Hughes Goes Green is currently collecting redeemable bottles and cans at the Long Beach Sunday Farmers Market located at Longfellow Elementary. Information and details on the Community Recycling Program will be circulating on school websites, backpack mail, on the Green Team page at LongBeachSundayMarket.com, CorridorVoices.com and it’s just a guess – but I bet they’ll have a facebook page soon too!
